In plain language
AI can support voter information and election administration, and it can also scale disinformation, deepfakes, microtargeting and opaque campaign tools. UNESCO, electoral-assistance bodies and platforms have issued guidance. Legal responses may sit in electoral law, audiovisual rules, data protection or platform regulation rather than in an “AI election statute.”
Why it matters for AI governance
Electoral harm is time-bound and hard to remedy after polling day. Governance here is about preparedness, disclosure, platform duties and independent observation—not only model evaluation.
